“WE DON’T STOP
UNITL WE CAN SAY:

THE CAR IS GREAT.”

Steffen, Department Manager Development Compact Cars

Today at AMG it is standard practice to make our own front axle kinematics, develop completely new axles, and do essentially whatever it takes to optimize handling the way we want it to be. As a result, an AMG chassis no longer has much in common with that of a series-production Mercedes. Practically every part is different now – in the case of the axle, for example, there's the wishbone, the rubber bushings, even the wheel bearings.

The development process for the chassis works like this: First there are two sets of parameters to work from, the dynamic handling specifications of the actual model and the values from the simulation. On the basis of that input, the initial parts are designed and then assembled.

These are then mounted in test vehicles and tested out on the race track. That’s where we reconcile the theoretical results with the subjective impressions and measured values. And we gradually approach the optimum in “innovation loops” – partly through mechanical modifications during testing, partly again with the support of simulations.

THROUGHOUT THE COMPANY RIGHT UP

TO THE GENERAL MANAGEMENT,

WE HAVE AN EXACT IDEA OF HOW DIRECTLY ANY GIVEN VEHICLE SHOULD RESPOND.

SUSPENSION DEVELOPMENT
AT AMG IS EXEMPLARY OF THE

TEAM SPIRIT THAT CHARACTERIZES
THE ENTIRE COMPANY.

That also means that race tracks are like a second workplace for many AMG engineers. Especially the Nürburgring’s North Loop. During testing, we have the advantage of working under cloister-like conditions, far removed from day-to-day operations, so we can really concentrate on our work.

One guy doesn’t do the shock absorber while the next guy makes an adjustment: Instead, everything is interconnected. Nobody can just sit back and say, ‘Well, my part works.’ It’s always about the whole vehicle. We don’t stop until we can say the car is great. That’s also one of the reasons why we achieve good results quickly.
